How Parks Victoria camping bookings work in 2026–27: the quarterly release, the random lobby, the 30-day refund cliff, half-price fees, and how to catch a cancellation at Tidal River or Lake Catani.
The system, in one paragraph
Parks Victoria campgrounds and roofed accommodation are booked at bookings.parks.vic.gov.au. Bookings are released four times a year, roughly 6 to 9 months ahead, staggered over three days with Tidal River first. On release day there's a lobby that randomly assigns queue positions at 10am. Cancellations go back on sale instantly, and the refund rules (100% at 30+ days, 50% at 8–29, nothing inside 8) mean they cluster around day 30 and day 8 before arrival. There's no ballot anywhere in Victoria any more.
That last point still trips people up, so let's start there.
The ballot is gone (since 2023)
For years Tidal River at Wilsons Promontory ran a ballot for Christmas and Easter. Parks Victoria scrapped it in 2023 when it moved to the current booking system, and said so explicitly: "Parks Victoria has removed the ballot from the last remaining balloted campground – Tidal River Campground at Wilsons Promontory National Park." Its current booking FAQ answers the ballot question with: "No, peak season will be managed as part of the quarterly bookings release program."
Plenty of older blog posts, forum threads and even some travel guides still describe a ballot. There isn't one. Peak-season Tidal River is first in, first served on release day, like everything else. We cover the Christmas specifics in the Tidal River Christmas booking guide.
The quarterly release
Each release opens a block of stays about three months long. From the Parks Victoria release schedule page:
- Currently open: all stays up to and including 28 February 2027. (The July 2026 release opened the summer block; the September release added 1 March – 30 June 2027.)
- Latest release: 28–30 September 2026, for stays 1 March to 30 June 2027, which covers Labour Day, Easter, Anzac Day and the King's Birthday long weekend.
Releases are staggered at 10am AEST/AEDT over three days:
- Day one: Tidal River campground.
- Day two: all roofed accommodation (cabins, huts, wilderness retreats, Discovery Tents).
- Day three: all other bookable campgrounds, including multi-day hike campsites.
Parks Victoria announces the next release date on the schedule page and in its newsletter, usually a few weeks ahead. A watch on nights that haven't been released yet fires when they open, but we don't send release reminders, so diary the date yourself. Based on the pattern so far (early March, early June/July, late September), the next one for stays from 1 July 2027 should land around March 2027, but Parks Victoria hasn't published a date as we write this, so treat that as a guess.
How the lobby works on release day
Parks Victoria's wording is precise, and worth reading literally:
- A "Lobby" opens before 10am. It is not a queue. Arriving early gives no advantage.
- At 10am, everyone in the lobby is randomly moved into a "Virtual Waiting Room", or straight into booking if demand is low.
- Anyone arriving after 10am joins the end of the waiting-room queue.
- A maximum of three campsites in the same campground can be booked per transaction.
So the strategy is simply: be in the lobby a few minutes before 10, know exactly which sites and dates you want, and have payment ready. There is a widely repeated tip that each browser gets its own lobby position; Parks Victoria doesn't endorse it, and we'd rather you didn't rely on it.
Fees: half price until July 2027
The Victorian Government is funding half-price camping fees at Parks Victoria campgrounds until July 2027. Fee amounts vary by campground and are on each campground's page; the booking information page has the schedule. There's no separate booking fee.
Refunds and changes: the 30-day cliff
From the Parks Victoria booking FAQ:
- 100% refund if you cancel 30 days or more before the first day of your trip.
- 50% refund at 8 to 29 days.
- No refund at less than 8 days.
- Bookings can be changed (another date, site or campground, subject to availability) up to check-in for camping, or 7 days before arrival for accommodation, but there's no refund on a changed booking.
This is the single most useful fact for anyone trying to get into a sold-out Victorian campground. Someone who booked Tidal River for Christmas in July and whose plans have since changed has every reason to cancel on day 31 and no reason to cancel on day 29. So cancellations bunch up in the week before the 30-day mark, and again just before day 8 for the 50%-back crowd. For 20 December – 26 January arrivals, that's roughly 20 November to 26 December. More on this in "Sold out" doesn't mean full.
Peak period rules at Tidal River
Tidal River has minimum stays over peak periods, which also apply to anyone picking up a cancellation:
- Summer peak (Sunday 20 December – Sunday 24 January): 7-night minimum, 14-night maximum, arrivals and departures on Sundays only.
- Labour Day weekend: 3-night minimum, arriving Friday.
- Easter: 4-night minimum, arriving Thursday.
- Melbourne Cup 2027: 4-night minimum, arriving Friday.
If you're watching Tidal River over summer, remember our alerts are per night: a single free night will trigger one, but you can only book a Sunday arrival of at least 7 nights, so check the booking page before you get excited.
The Victorian places we monitor
All of them, with live calendars, on the Victoria hub.
Two other things to know. From 1 July 2026 some Great Ocean Road campsites moved to the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority's own booking site, so if you're after Johanna Beach or Blanket Bay check which system has them. And the hike-in sites at the Prom are per-person permits, not per-site bookings.
Getting a site after it's sold out
There is no waitlist. A cancelled Parks Victoria booking is back on sale the moment it's processed, with no announcement.
Set a watch with Aussie Camp Alerts on the campground, with your first and last night, and we'll check it every few minutes, around the clock. Free users get one watch with email alerts 15 minutes after we spot an opening; the Summer Pass gets instant alerts by email, Telegram or browser push, up to 10 watches, for A$29 once. When you get the alert, the link takes you straight to the campground on bookings.parks.vic.gov.au and you book it yourself.
