The campgrounds and walks that sell out on release day: Tidal River, Osprey Bay, Lucky Bay, Depot Beach, the Overland Track and more. When each opens, why it sells out, and the cancellation route in.
What "sold out" means here
Each place on this list sells out its peak dates within hours of bookings opening. We know because we watch them. The list is ordered roughly by how hard they are to get, with the official booking rule for each, and the one thing that gets people in after the release: the cancellation market.
Every booking system on this page has no waitlist. Cancelled sites go straight back on sale with no announcement. If you want the mechanics, read how campsite cancellation alerts work.
1. Tidal River, Wilsons Promontory (VIC)
Tidal River has 484 sites and is still the hardest campground in Victoria to get at Christmas. The summer peak (20 December–24 January) is Sunday-to-Sunday, 7 nights minimum, 14 maximum. Stays are released quarterly, Tidal River a day ahead of everything else, with a random lobby at 10am. The ballot ended in 2023.
Why it comes back: Parks Victoria refunds 100% at 30+ days and 50% at 8–29. Families who booked in July and can't go cancel in late November, in a wave. Tidal River Christmas booking guide.
2. Osprey Bay, Cape Range (WA)
Osprey Bay's 46 sites on the Ningaloo Reef are released a month at a time, 10am AWST on the first Tuesday of each month, six months ahead, with a randomised queue. The April–October dry season is the peak, and the WA school holidays within it are the hardest dates.
Why it comes back: plans change, and the Park Stay WA cancellation fee is tiny (one concession camper fee per night, waived with enough notice). DBCA says the monthly release cut cancellations by almost 80%, but a 46-site campground over a six-month season still produces plenty. How to book Cape Range campsites.
3. The Overland Track (TAS)
The Overland Track allows 34 departures a day from 1 October to 31 May. Bookings for the whole season open on the first Tuesday in July at 9am AEST; in 2026 the December–March period was full by 2pm the same day.
Why it comes back: a 25% cancellation fee at 14+ days and nothing inside 14 means walkers who can't go cancel two to three weeks out. PWS confirms cancellations return to the booking site in real time, no waitlist. Overland Track booking and cancellations.
4. Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand (WA)
Lucky Bay: 56 sites behind the famous white beach at Esperance, 180-day rolling window at midnight AWST. Full at Christmas, Easter, every WA school holiday, and again in the September–October wildflower season. Specific sites can't be reserved; you choose on arrival.
Why it comes back: same WA cancellation terms. Esperance is a long drive from anywhere, and a lot of bookings are made by people planning a lap who later change route. Lucky Bay and Cape Le Grand guide.
5. Depot Beach, Murramarang (NSW)
Depot Beach is the NSW south coast's kangaroos-on-the-beach campground, and the Christmas–January block sells out the day each date opens in the rolling window. No release day, no ballot; just a date opening around 180 days out, every day.
Why it comes back: NPWS refunds 75% at 31+ days and 50% inside that. The 31-day cliff produces a cancellation wave in late November for Christmas dates. NSW National Parks booking guide.
6. Three Capes Track (TAS)
Three Capes: 48 walkers a day, A$650, hut to hut from Port Arthur. No single release day, but summer weekends and the Christmas period sell far ahead.
Why it comes back: 75% refund at 14+ days, nothing after, and all changes go through the booking team on weekdays. Cancellations surface in business hours, two to three weeks before the date. Three Capes Track booking and cancellations.
7. Trial Bay Gaol, Arakoon (NSW)
Trial Bay Gaol, South West Rocks. A big beachfront campground that caravanners book for the whole Christmas period as soon as the dates open. Same NSW rolling window and refund terms as Depot Beach.
8. Wilsons Prom hike-in campsites (VIC)
Sealers Cove, Refuge Cove, Little Waterloo Bay, Oberon Bay, Halfway Hut and Roaring Meg are per-person permits with a two-night maximum per area. Christmas, Easter and the long weekends go on release day (day three of each quarterly release).
Why it comes back: small bookings churn fast, and the same 30-day refund rule applies. Note the Sealers Cove boardwalk is closed for rebuilding, which makes that camp a 25 km walk in. Wilsons Prom overnight hikes guide.
9. Big Lagoon, Francois Peron (WA)
Big Lagoon: 19 sites on a Shark Bay lagoon, 4WD only. Small enough that the June–August and school holiday dates vanish the midnight they open.
10. Conto, Margaret River (WA)
Conto is big (116 sites), close to Perth, and still sells out every long weekend and school holiday. The advantage of a big campground is that cancellations are frequent; a watch on Conto for a long weekend is one of the surer bets on this list.
11. Lake Catani, Mount Buffalo (VIC)
Lake Catani is the only campground on the Buffalo plateau: cool in summer, lakeside, and gone for Christmas and Easter on release day three. Half-price Parks Victoria fees until July 2027 haven't helped availability.
12. Woody Head, Bundjalung (NSW)
Woody Head on the NSW north coast. Large, beachfront, and a Christmas fixture for the same families year after year, which is why it fills the day the dates open.
Honourable mentions
- Steep Point (8 sites, westernmost mainland Australia) and Shelter Bay in Edel Land, for fishers.
- Banksia Bluff and Thurra River in East Gippsland.
- Bonnie Vale in Royal National Park, an hour from Sydney.
- Sandy Cape at Jurien Bay, the nearest beach camp to Perth.
- Not monitored but just as hard: the Jatbula Trail (15 a day, early-February release) and Rottnest Island (monthly Open Days, nine months ahead). We have guides for Jatbula and Rottnest.
The pattern
Three booking models, one outcome:
| Model | Where | Release |
|---|
| Monthly block | Ningaloo Coast (WA), Rottnest | First Tuesday 10am AWST / first Wednesday 8:30am AWST |
| Quarterly block | Parks Victoria | Four times a year, 10am, staggered over three days |
| Rolling window | Rest of WA, NSW | 180 days ahead, a day at a time |
| Annual | Overland Track, Jatbula | One morning a year |
Whatever the model, peak dates go on release day and the rest of the year is a cancellation market. Set a watch with Aussie Camp Alerts on the place and dates you want and we'll tell you when any of those nights opens up, so you can book it on the official site. Free for one watch; A$29 once for the Summer Pass with instant alerts and up to 10 watches.
