Stay Rottnest releases accommodation on Open Days: the first Wednesday of each month at 8:30am, nine months ahead. The 2026–27 Open Day dates, how the queue works, and what to do when your dates are gone.
First, what we don't do
Aussie Camp Alerts doesn't monitor Rottnest Island. The Stay Rottnest booking site sits behind a bot-protection layer that we won't go around, so there's no live calendar or cancellation alert for Rottnest here. This guide exists because the booking system is genuinely confusing and the official information is scattered across a few pages and PDFs. Everything below is from the Rottnest Island Authority and Stay Rottnest.
What an Open Day is
Rottnest Island Authority accommodation (the self-contained units, heritage cottages, the campground, the hostel and dormitories) is sold through Stay Rottnest. Rather than a rolling window, availability is released in monthly blocks called Open Days.
- Open Days are on the first Wednesday of each month.
- Bookings open at 8:30am AWST, online or by phone.
- Each Open Day releases stays nine months ahead (Stay Rottnest booking guide).
So the Open Day in November releases stays for the following July, and so on. If you want the January school holidays, the Open Day you need is the first Wednesday in April.
The 2026–27 Open Day calendar
From the current Stay Rottnest booking guide:

As of October 2026, stays through to June 2027 have already been released and are on sale (or sold out) now.
The Authority has postponed Open Days before, so if you're planning around one, confirm it on the Stay Rottnest site in the week before.
How the queue works
Stay Rottnest uses a virtual queue, and the rules are the same ones you'll recognise from Ningaloo and Parks Victoria:
- Arrive before 8:30am and you'll be given a random position when the queue opens.
- Arrive after 8:30am and you go to the back.
- The online queue is much faster than the phone line (1800 111 111). Stay Rottnest's own guides say the large majority of successful bookings on an Open Day are made online within the first half hour.
- No walk-in bookings on Open Days, at the Fremantle office or the island visitor centre.
Accessible-accommodation requests go by email to stay@rottnestisland.com from 8:30am on the day, with an ACROD card attached, and are processed in the order received.
Prepare like a Ningaloo booking
The Authority's own tips, which match what works everywhere else:
- Shortlist four accommodation options, in order, because your first choice will probably be gone by the time you're through the queue. Know the location (Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay, Longreach, Fays Bay, the campground) and unit type you'd accept.
- Have the dates, group size, names and card ready.
- Be flexible on dates. Stay Rottnest's search can show alternative dates where something is available if your first pick isn't.
- One device, one tab. As with every virtual-queue system, multiple tabs risk your place.
School holidays are the hard dates. The island lists the 2026–27 WA school holidays as 4–19 July 2026, 26 September–11 October 2026, 17 December 2026–31 January 2027 and 10–25 April 2027. Summer is the hardest of all; weekday stays outside the holidays are much easier.
After the Open Day: cancellations
Rottnest accommodation does come back. Nine months is a long time to hold a plan, and Stay Rottnest's cancellation terms (which you'll see at booking) mean people who can't go cancel rather than forfeit. Released units simply reappear on the booking site.
Because we can't monitor it, the realistic approach is manual: check Stay Rottnest for your dates every day or two in the month before the trip, and more often in the last two weeks. The search's "flexible dates" view makes that quick.
We don't send Open Day reminders, so put the Open Day that matters to you in your own calendar, with an alarm for 8:15am.
Alternatives we do monitor
If Rottnest doesn't come through and you want coast and sea, the WA campgrounds with live calendars and cancellation alerts on Aussie Camp Alerts include:
All of them, with live calendars, on the Western Australia hub.
