Booking Le Grand Beach campground in Cape Le Grand NP near Esperance: only 14 sites, the 180-day window, availability tips and how to snag a cancellation.
About Le Grand Beach
Le Grand Beach is the smaller, quieter of the two bookable campgrounds in Cape Le Grand National Park, east of Esperance. It sits just behind the sand dunes on a long, wide sweep of beach, with Mount Le Grand (345 metres) rising behind camp and island peaks of the Recherche Archipelago out to sea.
The beach takes its name from an officer on the French expedition that charted this coast in 1792. It's also the western trailhead of the Le Grand Coastal Trail, so you can walk straight out of camp onto the slopes of Mount Le Grand for big views over the coastal plain. Fishing, surfing, swimming, snorkelling and diving are all on the menu. Esperance is the nearest town. We acknowledge the Wudjari people as the Traditional Owners of Cape Le Grand.
The campsites
Explore Parks WA lists 14 compacted crushed rock, reverse-in campsites, all unpowered, matching the 14 sites on Park Stay WA. You don't choose a particular site when booking: you pick from whatever's vacant when you arrive.
Facilities:
- Flush toilets, including an accessible option
- Showers (hot water not guaranteed)
- A sheltered kitchen area with gas barbecue, dishwashing sink, prep benches, picnic tables and benches
- No drinking water. Untreated water may be available but isn't guaranteed and needs treating
- No bins, so take all rubbish with you
- No campfires at any time
- No dogs or other pets (1080 baiting is ongoing in the park)
- Generators allowed 8am to 1pm and 5pm to 9pm only
Carry portable toilet waste out to an authorised dump point rather than emptying it into the campground toilets.
How booking works
Le Grand Beach is booked through Park Stay WA, DBCA's booking system. Bookings are essential and must be made before you arrive, one campsite per booking. There's no booking fee, and the camping fee is paid by Mastercard or Visa at the time of booking.
You pay a per person, per night camping fee plus a per vehicle park entry fee. The entry fee can be paid when booking, on arrival, or covered by a park pass, and trailers and caravans are exempt.
Dates open on a rolling 180-day window, roughly six months out. Maximum stay is 14 nights if any night falls in WA public school holidays, otherwise 28 nights.
When it sells out
With only 14 sites, Le Grand Beach can fill even faster than its big sister at Lucky Bay. Plenty of people who miss out on Lucky Bay try here next, so popular dates disappear quickly. Expect WA school holidays, long weekends and the Christmas and summer period to be the tightest, usually soon after those dates enter the 180-day window.
DBCA warns that December to April can be extremely hot with very high bushfire risk, and nights from June to September can be cold. Spring and autumn are often the sweet spot.
How to get a cancellation
Small campgrounds turn over in small numbers, but they do turn over. DBCA lets you cancel or change a booking up to 11:59pm AWST the day before arrival, and those nights go back on Park Stay.
When cancellations tend to appear:
- Inside the grace period. Bookings made 3 or more days ahead can be cancelled free within 48 hours.
- Just before the fee kicks in. Removing dates is free more than 14 days out for peak dates, or more than 5 days out otherwise. After that, DBCA charges one concession camper fee per night per site, so people tend to cancel right before the cut-off.
- The final days. Sites can come back right up to the night before arrival.
With so few sites, it's worth letting something else keep an eye on it. Watch Le Grand Beach on Aussie Camp Alerts and we'll email you when a night you want frees up. The free plan includes one watch.
Getting there
DBCA puts Cape Le Grand National Park about 50 kilometres from Esperance by sealed road. Small boats can be launched from Le Grand Beach with caution, though DBCA says Lucky Bay is the better launch spot. If you drive onto the sand, ask the ranger about surface and tide conditions first: these beaches bog vehicles easily, wet or dry.
