14 Mile on the Warroora Coast: cyclone closures, how Park Stay bookings work, when availability returns and how to catch a 14 Mile reopening or cancellation.
About 14 Mile
14 Mile is a medium-sized beach campground on the Warroora Coast, part of the Nyinggulu (Ningaloo) Coastal Reserves south of Coral Bay. It sits beside a recreation zone of Ningaloo Marine Park, so you can swim and snorkel straight off the beach, and small boats and kayaks can be launched from the sand by 4WD. It's one of only four Warroora campgrounds where DBCA allows boat launching.
Warroora is a long stretch of coast with lagoons, rocky escarpments and plenty of marine life close to shore. The Baiyungu, Thalanyji and Yinigurdira people are the Traditional Owners. Coral Bay is the nearest town and your last chance for supplies.
Status as of October 2026: 14 Mile was damaged by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle. Campsites 12 to 28 are closed and need to be relocated and rebuilt, and the whole campground is due to close for cyclone recovery works. DBCA's sources disagree on when that full closure starts. The current Park Stay notice says the entire campground closes from 1 January 2027. DBCA's August 2026 Ningaloo camping FAQ, and notices still showing on the Explore Parks Warroora Coast and Cape Range park pages, say it closes from Thursday 29 October 2026. The DBCA park alerts site is the place to confirm the date before you travel. No reopening date has been announced.
The campsites
The Explore Parks page lists 46 campsites varying in size, surface and distance from the beach, all unpowered, which matches Park Stay. Fewer are bookable right now because of the cyclone closures. Check the site details and the campground map before you book.
This is self-sufficient camping:
- No facilities at all: no toilets, no drinking water, no bins.
- Bring a portable, self-contained toilet approved for use in Australia that can be emptied at a dump point. There's a chemical toilet dump point about 2km away.
- Carry all rubbish out.
- Generators are permitted.
- Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash at all times.
- Campfires only when conditions allow, and only in your own portable, self-contained fire ring. The usual season is April to October. Bring your own firewood, as collecting it isn't allowed.
- Unlicensed ATVs, quad bikes and other off-road vehicles aren't allowed in the reserves.
There's no park entry fee for the Warroora Coast. You pay a per person, per night camping fee (the lower rate for campgrounds with no facilities, with concession and child rates) by Mastercard or VISA when you book. Volunteer campground hosts are sometimes on site.
How booking works
Bookings are essential, made before arrival through Park Stay WA, one campsite per booking, with no booking fee.
As a Ningaloo Coast campground, 14 Mile is released in monthly blocks on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00am AWST, rather than the rolling 180-day window used elsewhere in WA. As of October 2026, stays to 30 April 2027 are on sale and the next block (30 April to 1 June 2027) opens at 10am AWST on Tuesday 3 November 2026, though closed sites and closed periods won't be released. Expect a virtual waiting room on release mornings.
The maximum stay is 14 nights if any night is in WA public school holidays, otherwise 28 nights.
When it sells out
In a normal year, Ningaloo beach campgrounds like this one are in heavy demand, particularly over the cooler months and WA school holidays. With part of the campground already closed and a full closure coming, the number of nights on offer is smaller than usual. Once rebuilt sites are released again, expect a rush.
How to get a cancellation
DBCA's rules let campers cancel or change up to 11:59pm AWST on the day before arrival, and those nights return to the pool for anyone to grab.
Timing matters:
- Bookings made three or more days ahead can be cancelled free within 48 hours, so the two days after a release morning often shake loose a few nights.
- Removing dates is free more than 14 days out for peak dates and more than 5 days out otherwise, so cancellations tend to bunch up just before those cut-offs.
- Late changes of plan mean sites can pop up right up to the day before arrival.
If DBCA closes a campground on you, they offer an alternative or a full refund with no cancellation fee.
While the campground is closed, the useful move is a reopening watch. Watch 14 Mile on Aussie Camp Alerts and we'll email you when nights go from closed to bookable on Park Stay, so you hear about the reopening without checking every day.
Getting there
14 Mile is about 41km south of Coral Bay. Access is for high-clearance 4WD vehicles with low-range gears only. Let your tyres down for the soft sand track, and note there's nowhere to reinflate on the way out, so bring a compressor. Check the Main Roads WA travel map for road conditions and download the mud map from Explore Parks.
The area is very remote. Carry enough water, food, fuel and first aid for your stay, and remember November to April is cyclone season with extreme heat and high bushfire risk.
Nearby alternatives
Other Warroora Coast campgrounds are booked the same way and share the same rules:
- Sandy Point, a smaller beach campground also with boat launching.
- Lagoon, 20 sites further south along the coast.
- Peoples Park Coral Bay, a caravan park in town with facilities, if you'd rather not go fully self-contained.
