North Lefroy in Nyinggulara NP is closed after Cyclone Narelle. What its 51 sites offer, how Park Stay booking works and how to know when you can book again.
About North Lefroy
North Lefroy is a coastal campground in Nyinggulara National Park (listed by DBCA as "ex-Ningaloo"), north of Coral Bay. It lies alongside a recreation zone of Ningaloo Marine Park, and before the cyclone campers could launch small boats and kayaks from the beach by 4WD. It's a remote, no-frills spot for people who want their camp a few steps from the water and are happy to bring everything with them.
The Baiyungu, Thalanyji and Yinigurdira people are the Traditional Owners of Nyinggulara National Park. Coral Bay is the closest town for supplies.
Status as of October 2026: North Lefroy is closed. Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle badly damaged every campground in Nyinggulara National Park (Janes Bay, North Lefroy, Point Billie, South Lefroy and Winderabandi), and DBCA says they need complete rebuilding. The park's radio tower was also damaged, so there are no emergency communications. All campsites are closed until further notice and can't be booked until a reopening is confirmed. DBCA has not given an estimated reopening date. Keep an eye on the DBCA park alerts site.
The campsites
Explore Parks lists fifty-one campsites varying in size, surface and distance from the beach, all unpowered, and Park Stay shows the same 51. After a full rebuild the layout may change, so check the site details and campground map once bookings reopen.
From DBCA's current campground page:
- A toilet dump point is the only facility. No toilets, no drinking water, no bins.
- Bring a portable, self-contained toilet approved for use in Australia that can be emptied at a dump point.
- Carry all rubbish out.
- Generators are permitted.
- Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash at all times. Nyinggulara is a 1080 baiting area, which is deadly to dogs.
- Campfires only when conditions permit, in your own portable, self-contained fire ring. They're not allowed on days of high fire danger or above. Bring your own firewood.
- No unlicensed ATVs, quad bikes or other off-road vehicles.
There's no park entry fee for Nyinggulara. You pay a per person, per night camping fee at the no-facilities rate (with concession and child rates) by Mastercard or VISA when booking.
How booking works
North Lefroy is booked on Park Stay WA, DBCA's booking system. Bookings are essential and must be made before arrival, for one campsite per booking, and there's no booking fee.
Ningaloo Coast campgrounds use monthly release blocks, opening on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00am AWST, rather than a rolling 180-day window. As of October 2026, open Ningaloo campgrounds are bookable to 30 April 2027, and the block for 30 April to 1 June 2027 opens at 10am AWST on Tuesday 3 November 2026. DBCA hasn't said how North Lefroy's nights will be released once it reopens.
The maximum stay is 14 nights if any night is in WA public school holidays, otherwise 28 nights.
When it sells out
Ningaloo beach camping is in high demand at the best of times, particularly over the cooler months and WA school holidays. With all five Nyinggulara campgrounds out of action, there's a lot of pent-up demand, and the first nights released after the rebuild are likely to be snapped up fast.
How to get a cancellation
Until North Lefroy reopens, there are no bookings to cancel. If your booking was affected by the closure, DBCA's terms say you'll be offered an alternative or a refund with no cancellation fee.
When bookings resume, DBCA's normal cancellation rules apply. Campers can cancel or change up to 11:59pm AWST on the day before arrival, and the nights return to Park Stay. Cancellations usually show up within the free 48-hour grace period after release mornings, just before the free-removal cut-offs (more than 14 days out for peak dates, more than 5 days out otherwise), and right up to arrival.
The smart move now is a reopening watch. Watch North Lefroy on Aussie Camp Alerts and we'll email you as soon as nights go from closed to bookable, so you're not checking Park Stay every week.
Getting there
DBCA puts North Lefroy about 101km north of Coral Bay. Access is for high-clearance 4WD vehicles with low-range gears only. Expect a soft sand track: drop your tyre pressures and carry a compressor, because there's nowhere to reinflate on the way out. Don't head in while the park is closed, and check DBCA alerts and the Main Roads WA travel map before you plan a trip.
Nearby alternatives
While Nyinggulara is closed, try these on Park Stay:
- South Lefroy Bay, the larger neighbouring campground, also closed.
- Yardie Creek in Cape Range National Park.
- 14 Mile on the Warroora Coast (check its own cyclone closure).
- Lagoon, also on the Warroora Coast.
